An ongoing issue close to the heart of the Randwick community. To link Randwick to the City by light rail needs community support. The Randwick City Council, University of NSW, and the Australian Turf Club are leading the way in supporting the implementation of a light rail transport as a matter of priority. They are co-funding a pre-feasibility study into light rail to examine potential routes, preliminary costings, financial viability, and patronage. “Up to 80,000 people drive to events at the Moore Park sport grounds and Randwick Racecourse on the weekend, shutting down parts of the city for hours at a time – a light rail to the eastern suburbs would relieve the pressure, and help staff and students get to the hospitals, and students to UNSW.” (MP Clover Moore, July 1 2011 press release) This infrastructure change could lead to a much more reliable public transportation system by reducing congestion.
